winter window watching

As far as i can remember i enjoy the winter season for being able to look into other people's houses. As a child of three and four whenever i was allowed to fall asleep in my parents' bed i would watch the windows opposite our apartment building on the other side of the alley. i had a couple of favourite ones that had purplish, red, warm yellow or green lights and i was curious who would be at home a particular night. When lucky i would see someone by a window doing the dishes. i wondered about the people who lived there. When my parents were not at home i sometimes dared to sneak out of bed and stand by the window attempting to get a better peek. Though at these occasions i also closely observed the parking lot below to see when my parents would finally be back, because i was scared alone. i remember one time i was leaning hard into the window to catch a sight at the moon and my pyjamas got entangled with mom's big cactus and i struggled desperately to free myself. i confessed to mom only many many years later, but she just laughed saying that i had been captivated by the moon as long as she can remember. When my brother was born and i was five we moved to a new flat and there i was often sad that from my upstairs bunk bed there was no house opposite to watch windows at dark.
