Early September, Adam (here with his favourite toy, but - yes - i do admit it IS practical)
and i set out to explore Yosemite's back-country. We spent several days in wilderness, climbing mountains and setting up temporary over-night-homes in green cold valleys or at bare mountain sides with stunning views. the long, well enjoyed cut-off from phones, internet and all the rest of mundane civilisation plus busy SF departure and Berlin arrival days thereafter retarded my blog posting about this breathtaking adventure. finally, it is time to upload some pictures, one day at a time.

courtesy of AMTRAK we made it to this beautiful national park well and safe in the most relaxing sort of way in terms of transportation. heading out there we passed Merced, where the yard sale next door seems the only happening around.

out there in Merced, strolling around the AMTRAK station we met this crazy guy who claimed that his uncle had developed the US anti-missile defence system. enthusiastically he riffled through his old backpack to produce some crinkly faded photograph as a proof. here he is
his "Bye bye Russia!" stuck with us and kept on ringing in our ears for quite some time ...
a regional bus brought us from Merced to Yosemite Village. it was
a ride with amazing views as we approached the mountains. for me it was the first time riding a bus across US country. funnily, this busride reminded me of travelling through Ecuador. the names of many places we passed were actually in Spanish and also the facades looked latin more than often.
in the village, we ran our last errands: acquiring wilderness passes, visiting the old-fashion post office, doing last calls and email for daily-life management before taking off at last, planning the tour a little more, learning about back-country hiking in Yosemite, making all our gear
bear-proof (i.e. storing all food and toiletries in bear-proof containers), cooking the first meals on the stove, starting the logbooks, washing ourselves for the last time, doing final inventory of the cliff bars on stock, strolling a first little hike to a waterfall, spotting climbers on El Capitan, glancing and meditating over Half Dome where we would be heading next day ...
Half Dome, as seen from the meadows in Yosemite Village.
