sometimes, on my way from A to Z i do take my camera out and shoot a picture. i admire Russian women on 10 cm high, only-one-quarter-the-size-stilettos of stiletto heels stalking along Moscow's broken asphalt appearing to be competing for the title of the the prettiest dolly in the nation. i walk the long Metro escalators up and down, so i move even faster. i got lost in the Metro actually, but did find my way back out. i walk the streets as much as i can. i marvel at orthodox cupolas reflected in the glassy facades of the high-rise next to them. i marvel at the Russian words sputtering out of my mouth from shores in my brain i did not know they existed. i shine and wax my boots every morning and a 100 steps later they are dirty once again. carry-on shoe polish is a handy piece to own and take along. i eat lunch in simple local stolovayas - cafeterias - with canny Russian mamushkas and babushkas who search for a vegetarian piece in their big pots here and there. i am tired of George Micheal's enthusiastic love pop songs for each morning's breakfast at golden tables, leaning over sterling cutlery and golden napkins. Wednesday was a highlight with the classics of classical music for a change - i felt like i had turned into a princess with my horse waiting right outside the lobby where the jingling piano player resides. i turned Wednesday into the day of pancakes - bliny - with cherry jam. Moscow's streets are grey, Petersburg is only two more days away.
